Blepharoplasty in the UAE: Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty in the UAE can address excess eyelid skin or selected changes in the fat around the eyes. The right treatment starts with understanding why the eyes look heavy or tired. Loose upper eyelid skin, a low eyebrow, a drooping eyelid margin and bags beneath the eyes are different problems, even when they appear together.

Eyelid surgery should preserve comfortable eye closure and function while working towards your cosmetic goals. This guide explains the differences between upper and lower blepharoplasty, what an assessment involves and how to prepare for recovery.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery: the difference

Upper blepharoplasty usually treats excess skin within the upper lid and, where needed, selected fat or other tissue. The incision is commonly placed in the eyelid crease. The amount removed must be carefully planned so the eye can continue to close properly.

Lower blepharoplasty may address prominent fat pads, lax skin or the transition between the lower lid and cheek. Fat may be repositioned or removed according to the anatomy. An incision can be placed below the eyelashes or inside the lower eyelid. An internal approach does not itself remove external skin, and additional support may be necessary when the lower lid is loose.

What blepharoplasty cannot reliably correct

Dark circles may reflect pigmentation, thin skin, shadows or several factors together. Removing a bag does not guarantee that all darkness will disappear. Fine wrinkles at the outer corners of the eyes are another separate concern.

A brow that has descended can push skin towards the upper lid; removing eyelid skin alone may not address the underlying cause. True eyelid ptosis is a low position of the eyelid margin and requires a different assessment. Mention any difficulty keeping the eyes open, changes in vision or symptoms that vary during the day. These should be evaluated before a cosmetic plan is agreed.

Who may benefit from an eyelid assessment?

People considering treatment may be concerned about upper-lid hooding, lower-lid bags or a combination. When upper skin obstructs vision, a clinical eye examination and sometimes visual-field testing help establish the functional problem. Cosmetic concern and visual impairment should not be assumed to be the same thing.

Tell the surgeon about dry eyes, contact lenses, thyroid disease, glaucoma, previous eye surgery and any difficulty closing your eyes during sleep. General conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure, can also affect planning. Smoking and nicotine use, medicines and supplements need an honest discussion. An examination may lead to further eye-specialist advice or to a decision that surgery should wait.

Preparing for blepharoplasty

The consultation should include the position of the brows and eyelids, existing asymmetry, eye comfort and the amount of skin that can be treated. Ask to see the proposed incision placement and to hear why the recommended approach fits your anatomy.

  • Explain your main concern in your own words and point to the area involved.
  • Bring details of eye drops, prescribed medicines and previous treatments.
  • Ask who will provide anaesthesia and where the operation will take place.
  • Obtain instructions for transport, support at home and follow-up.
  • Confirm how to obtain urgent advice if pain or vision changes develop.

Do not independently stop prescribed medicines, including anticoagulants. The surgical team should coordinate any changes with the clinician who prescribed them. Prepare glasses if contact lenses will be restricted, and arrange time away from tasks that require sustained visual concentration.

What happens on the day?

Depending on the operation and your health, eyelid surgery may use local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia. Upper and lower lids can sometimes be treated together, but the decision should reflect the benefit and additional recovery demands.

Before discharge, you should understand how to use prescribed ointments or drops, whether there are stitches to remove and when your first review is scheduled. Temporary blurring can occur with ointment or swelling, but new or worsening visual symptoms must not be casually attributed to normal healing.

Recovery and returning to work

Bruising, swelling, sensitivity and a feeling of tightness are common early on. Your team may advise head elevation, cold compresses and a specific cleaning routine. Use only the products and methods they recommend, and avoid rubbing the eyes.

Many patients plan around two weeks away from work, with longer allowance for visible bruising, physically demanding roles or a more extensive procedure. Some people feel able to do light tasks sooner, while others need more time. Comfort, eye function and the surgeon's assessment determine when activities can restart.

Ask separately about driving, screens, contact lenses, make-up, swimming and exercise. Strong sunlight and dusty or windy conditions can irritate recovering eyes, so discuss practical protection for life in the UAE. Keep follow-up visits in your schedule and obtain advice before arranging a flight. Scars and residual swelling may continue to change for months.

Risks that deserve a clear discussion

Risks include infection, bleeding, visible scars, asymmetry, dry eyes and difficulty closing the eyes. The lower eyelid can pull down or turn outwards, and further treatment may be needed. Changes in sensation, persistent discomfort and dissatisfaction with the result are also possible. Rare bleeding within the eye socket or other complications can threaten vision.

Sudden loss or change of vision, severe eye pain or rapidly increasing swelling requires immediate emergency assessment. Contact the surgical team urgently for increasing redness, discharge, fever or worsening inability to close the eye. A routine review is not an appropriate reason to delay help when symptoms are significant.

Blepharoplasty cost in the UAE

Cost depends on whether upper lids, lower lids or both are treated, the technique, anaesthetic and facility. Additional support or treatment of another concern changes the plan. Request a written quotation that includes tests, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, medication, follow-up and the policy for unexpected care.

If the concern affects vision, ask your insurer directly about assessment and approval requirements. A functional complaint does not automatically mean the procedure is covered.

Will eyelid surgery remove every dark circle?

No. Surgery can change selected structural causes of shadowing, but pigmentation and skin-related darkness may remain. Ask the surgeon to identify which part of your concern is likely to respond and which part is outside the planned operation.

How long do blepharoplasty results last?

Results can remain noticeable for years, although the eyelids and surrounding face continue to age. Existing skin quality and later brow changes influence the appearance. Some patients need further treatment later; a fixed duration or lifelong result cannot be promised.

Can upper and lower lids be treated together?

They can in suitable patients, after an assessment of eye health and surgical risk. Treating both is not automatically better. Ask what each procedure adds and whether separate operations would make more sense for your circumstances.

Will the scars be visible?

Upper incisions are generally positioned in the eyelid crease, while lower approaches differ. Scars often become less conspicuous as they mature but do not disappear completely. Your healing, skin characteristics and incision placement affect their final appearance.
