Liposuction or Tummy Tuck? How the Procedures Differ

The key difference

Liposuction removes selected fat through small access points. It relies on the skin’s ability to contract and does not repair separated abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck removes an area of excess skin, usually creates a lower abdominal scar and may tighten the muscle layer.

When liposuction may fit

It may suit a patient with localised fat, relatively good skin elasticity and stable weight. It is not a treatment for obesity or a guarantee of completely smooth skin. Removing fat where the skin is loose can sometimes make laxity more visible.

When a tummy tuck may fit

Abdominoplasty may be considered after pregnancy or substantial weight change when loose skin or muscle separation is the main concern. The trade-off is a larger operation, longer scar and more demanding recovery.

Can they be combined?

Selected liposuction may be combined with abdominoplasty to refine contour, but this is not automatically safer or better. Surgical extent, blood supply, anaesthesia duration, clot risk and recovery support must be assessed.
